Furnace-like glow from the Britannia Tubular Bridge over the Menai Strait at the height of the fire. The bridge, carrying the railway line between Anglesey and Bangor, was badly damaged by the fire. Built by Robert Stephenson and completed in 1850, the bridge carried rail traffic from London to Holyhead, which is the main link between Great Britain and the Republic of Ireland. May 24, 1970
