How Joe Gelhardt tied James Milner in the Leeds history books against Chelsea

Gelhardt announces itself in Yorkshire

Leeds United star Joe Gelhardt put his name in the spotlight in Yorkshire today despite the latest 3-2 loss to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge after scoring his first Premier League goal for Marcelo Bielsa’s troops.

At just 19, Gelhardt made his fourth Premier League appearance in an eight-minute appearance on the bench when he replaced influential winger Raphinha in the 82nd minute, and he wasted no time for take Leeds back into the fight when they equalized a minute later with their first touch in the game.

His goal meant that he became the first Leeds United teenager to score in English football’s top flight since James Milner achieved the same feat in April 2004, when he also made a name for himself at Elland Road.

While the goal wasn’t enough for Leeds to steal a point at Stamford Bridge against title contenders Chelsea, it was ample proof that Leeds may well be in good hands as No.9 for the foreseeable future.

Leeds star ready for big things

“He’s like a human wrecking ball. I like him, he is really exciting. He’s fast, he’s aggressive, he takes the ball, he faces people. Once in the box, he loves it. This is where he can do most of his damage. – Marcelo Bielsa via Sky Sports

Few have been surprised that Joe Gelhardt has already opened his Premier League account after just four appearances for Leeds, certainly not boss Marcelo Bielsa, who has already praised the 19-year-old Liverpool-born starlet.

A forward who matches both the physical and tactical profile demanded by Bielsa, Gelhardt could be rewarded with more minutes – and even a handful of starts – if Bamford continues to struggle to get back in shape while other advanced options such as Rodrigo fail to remain a consistent goal threatens this term.
