The Society For History Education promotes equity and diversity in history education through the publication of its journal – The History Teacher


The history teacher captures relevant topics that are poised to tackle inequality in education and promote inclusion

Academic institutions have a role to play in eliminating inequalities and disparities in education. The history teacher is a peer-reviewed journal that focuses on methods of teaching history and has been housed in the History Department at California State University, Long Beach since 1972. The responsibility of the History Department in preparing high school teachers and its strong bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in history have made them leaders in discussions about history’s most important pedagogies. The history teacher aims to facilitate broader discussions between K-12 history teachers and university history teachers with the goal of making history pedagogy more inclusive.

In recognition of their efforts, the Society for History Education (SHE) received a grant from the American Historical Association (AHA) to support efforts to promote inclusion and diversity through The history teacher. The AHA grant is intended to help institutions that have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. SHE is one of fifty grant recipients and one of two in California, comprised of site-based organizations, member associations, and history departments of historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs).

The newspaper, The history teacher, was recognized by the AHA for the quality of its content and expert contributions. The $26,000 grant will fund initiatives to bridge the communication gap between K-12 history teachers and university teachers. The grant will also facilitate inclusive history teaching practices and promote funding for controversial but culturally relevant historical topics. In 2019, the journal had approximately 250,000 digital downloads and served history teachers in elementary, secondary and post-secondary classrooms.

The society is affiliated with the American History Association and was established in 1967 and currently has up to 2,000 members. It was created to support all disciplines of history education in universities, colleges and pre-college schools through the use of practical and professional analyzes of traditional and innovative teaching techniques.
